At one time the "Philadelphia Inquirer" was one of the most respected
dailies in the country, but in an era of corporate cutbacks, the newspaper
is struggling to maintain its high standards.
SCOTT SIMON, Host: There was a time when Americans received most
of their news from newspaper empires, not merged, multi-national,
multi-media behemoths. The emperors of information tended to be rich,
vain men and women who already owned department stores, mines, steel
mills or railroads. They were often not averse to losing a million
dollars here, a million dollars there, on a newspaper to have a voice
