BOB EDWARDS, HOST: This is NPR's MORNING EDITION. I'm Bob Edwards.
China is in the midst of its toughest crackdown on pro-democracy activists
in years. Three dissidents have been given long prison terms for
trying to start an opposition party. Another was sent to jail for
giving an interview to the U.S. government-funded Radio Free Asia.
China also has warned its own journalists against publishing or broadcasting
anything considered a threat to social or political stability.
NPR's Mary Kay Magistad reports from Beijing.
