Astronomy: The Solar System

A solar system includes planets, their satellites, comets, minor planets (asteroids), and other interplanetary materials. Our solar system consists of a central star, the Sun, nine planets (possibly more in the past), more than 60 satellites (or moons), more than 5,000 minor planets (asteroids), numerous comets, and smaller interplanetary dust and debris. It is a compact unit, with most of the planets and satellites traveling along the same plane (called the plane of the ecliptic). Gravity holds the entire system together.
