BRITAIN and France emerged from the Suez crisis as end-of-empire losers, whilst Israel came out a winner on the path to becoming a Middle East nuclear power.
Forty years ago this month Britain and France, in league with Israel, failed to retake the Suez Canal from Egypt. But, "on the other hand," according to Abba Eban, "Israel came out with very solid gains."
The Israelis crossed the Gaza Strip and Sinai Desert with the declared aim of stopping attacks by Egyptian- backed Palestinian fedayeen terrorists.
