MBERENGWA, Nov. 5 (AIA/GIN) -- In Mberengwa, Midlands, a tiny
minority of the Remba ethnic group still practices teenage female
circumcision.
They maintain this tradition of passage into womanhood despite
strong disapproval from scientists and modern beliefs. Health
workers say the practice causes serious health problems, including
shock, depression, hemorrhaging, and sometimes death from excessive
bleeding or infection from unsterilized equipment.
"This is part of our tradition and culture," says 66-year-old
Chief Ambrosios Makotore Mposi, who presides over the Remba people.
"An uninitiated person is dirty and immoral to us." ...
