SYDNEY, Nov. 10 (IPS) -- The world renowned Great Barrier Reef,
off Australia's northeast coastline, is at the center of a showdown
between conservationists and scientists over plans to allow
experimental commercial fishing in what is now a protected area.
The federal government has already given the green light for a
proposal by the Reef Research Center at the James Cook University
in Townsville to study the impact of commercial and recreational
fishing on 24 reefs within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier
Reef Marine Park off the Queensland coast.
