small for gestational age (SGA) infant, a baby whose weight and size at birth is smaller than 90% of all babies born. Factors linked with smallness other than hereditary include any disorder causing short stature, as dwarfism, malnutrition in the womb, and certain infections, including cytomegalovirus, rubella virus, and Toxoplasma gondii.
