/tes'tis/, pl. testes, one of the pair of male gonads that produce semen. The adult testes are suspended in the scrotum by the spermatic cords. In early fetal life they are within the abdominal cavity behind the lining (peritoneum). Before birth they normally lower into the scrotum. Each testis is an oval body about 4 cm long, 2.5 cm wide.
