I'm Ira Flatow.
You may not realize it, but your body may be fighting thousands of
battles each day. Our immune systems, our primary defense against
attacks from such foreign invaders as viruses or parasites or bacteria
can detect and destroy as many as 1 billion -- 1 billion different
foreign microbes. That's quite a feat.
But just how does the immune system fight the good fight? And what
happens when things go wrong?
