ALEX CHADWICK, HOST: Four officials from the former East Germany are
on trial in Berlin, accused of complicity in the deaths of hundreds
of East Germans who were trying to escape to the West over the Berlin
Wall. The four face charges of manslaughter for their part in ordering
that those attempting to flee should be shot.
NPR's Edward Lifson reports from Berlin.
EDWARD LIFSON, NPR REPORTER: The men on trial are two deputy defense
ministers from the former East Germany, a general from the military,
and the former Communist Party security chief. All of the men are
