Statement of Senator Herb Kohl Antitrust Subcommittee Hearing on Consolidation in the Telephone Industry May 19, 1998

Today, our aim is to look at those mergers and examine whether, on balance, they are good or bad for consumers. Our point of departure is the recent SBC/Ameritech deal, which at an estimated $60 billion dwarfs all of its predecessors in size and scope. It again presents us with the promise of competition tomorrow, but the reality of consolidation today.
