Overview: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer of women and the second leading cause of cancer deaths among American women. Regular mammography and clinical breast exams are essential for early detection of breast cancer. For women age 50-69, having regular mammograms can reduce the chance of death from breast cancer by one- third or more. During the most recent five-year period, mortality rates among white women declined for all decades of ages between 30 and 79 and for all decades of ages among black women from 30 to 69. A July 1998 article in the journal Cancer attributes the decrease to a trend toward progressively earlier diagnosis of breast cancer. ...
