The last time I saw Harris - well, his name was Arkie, actually, but further down the column you'll see why I couldn't resist the allusion to Oscar Hammerstein's lyric - must have been early in March 1953 when the intrepid newshound was leaving for Dublin, hot on the trail of John Christie, the serial killer. Arkie arrived in Ireland just as the unshaven, shabby and penniless murderer was being arrested on the Thames Embankment.
