SCOTT SIMON, HOST: This is WEEKEND EDITION. I'm Scott Simon. There
are some songs that seep into you, and stay a while. Mary Chapin
Carpenter has written more than a few of them. Since his early days
as our neighborhood singer-songwriter in Washington, D.C., Mary Chapin
Carpenter has made portraits of her own personal experience resonate
with a growing following around the world, and five Grammy awards
and her other accolades. Like many of the most accomplished artists,
her work can span and even defy the categories on which we've come
