Hansen Votes to Scrap the Tax Code Calls for a fairer, simpler tax code by 2002

Washington, D.C.: The House of Representatives passed the Tax Code Termination Act today to sunset the existing tax code in 2002 and begin a four year debate on national tax policy. The bill ends the existing tax code effective December 31, 2002 (except for sections related to payroll taxes which fund Social Security and Medicare) and directs Congress to enact a new tax system by July 4, 2002 to allow for a smooth transition.
