These arresting words were written by the navigator and explorer Jacques
Cartier in his journal as he sailed past the bleak northern shore
of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, today's Labrador and Quebec, in the summer
of 1534. Carrier's image of the desolate region is the earliest (and
most powerful) image associated with the new land based on personal
