PHILADELPHIA - The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency will be holding
three meetings to discuss Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs). Under
the
Clean Water Act, EPA sets standards and states are required to calculate
total acceptable loads of various pollutants for rivers and lakes
that
are too dirty for fishing or swimming. The TMDL is a numerical basis
for
a water quality management plan to reduce pollution loads that starts
by
measuring how much pollution a river or lake has, versus how much
it can
tolerate. The TMDL also takes into account the total amount of pollution
from all significant sources and includes a built in safety factor.
