BOB EDWARDS, HOST: NBC Television estimates almost 90 million people
watched the final episode of its comedy series "Seinfeld" last night.
After nine years as the star and producer of one of television's
top-10 shows, Jerry Seinfeld got weary of it anyway and announced
he would quit.
The show's passing is a cultural milestone, like the tearful farewells
once accorded Mary Tyler Moore and the rowdy bar crew at "Cheers"
-- something everyone cares about; or almost everyone.
For a certain narrow segment of the country -- say, those who get
up at ridiculously early hours to go to work -- Seinfeld comes on
