TERRY GROSS, HOST: This is FRESH AIR. I'm Terry Gross.
Yesterday was the 75th anniversary of the birth of Hank Williams,
one of the originators of country music. In celebration, a new 10-
CD boxed set has been released. It was co-produced by Colin Escott,
who also wrote a biography of Williams. Escott says Williams made
the single most important body of recordings in country music; he
set the standard by which success is measured on every level -- including
self-destruction.
Williams died at the age of 29. In his short, six-year recording
career, he made such classic says "Your Cheatin' Heart," " I'm So
Lonesome I Could Cry," "Honky ...
