CHARLES GIBSON: This morning, 22 major league umpires are out, out of work. Back in July, in a bitter labor dispute, they offered their resignations, to take effect today. It was supposed to be a negotiating ploy, but it backfired when baseball said, Thank you very much, and accepted the resignations.

The umps then tried to take them back yesterday.

Expecting that they would probably lose in court, the umpires gave up.
