At Levin's Urging, HCFA Broadens Eligibility For Pancreas Transplants
WASHINGTON -- Earlier this year, Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., joined
a bipartisan
group of colleagues in urging the Health Care Financing Administration
(HCFA) to review its newly adopted policy regarding Medicare coverage
of
pancreas transplants, particularly HCFA's requirement that Medicare
would
cover a pancreas transplant only if it followed a Medicare- covered
kidney
transplant. In response to their concerns, HCFA revised the policy,
dropping
the kidney transplant pre-requirement.
