Arnhem Land Region
Arnhem Land was named by Matthew Flinders in 1803. A Dutch name, he called the area after a ship whose crew sighted the northern Arnhem coastline in the 1620s. Arnhem Land is made up of the entire north-eastern half of the Top End of the Northern Territory, beyond Kakadu National Park. The Arnhem Land Aboriginal Land Trust owns and manages the site and, except for one town, it cannot be visited without special permission.
