1988: New Parliament House Opens
On 9 May 1988, sixty-one years after the first 'temporary' Parliament House opened in the national capital, Canberra, a new permanent Parliament House was opened by Queen Elizabeth II. The new Parliament House was the most important building project of the bicentennial year. Because of financial constraints, the first Parliament House had been built as a temporary legislative building and not according to the grand plan of Canberra's designer Walter Burley Griffin.
