Economy Grows at 5.5 Percent Rate

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The U.S. economy, buoyed by hardy consumer spending, grew at a robust 5.5 percent annual rate in the first three months of 2000, the Commerce Department said Thursday.

The January-through-March increase in the gross domestic product, the nation's total output of goods and services, showed the economy growing slightly faster than the 5.4 percent rate of the government's two previous estimates.

Many analysts had expected the government's final reading on first-quarter GDP growth -- which is based on more data -- to remain at the 5.4 percent rate.
