Vic: No need to change abortion laws: Thwaites

MELBOURNE, July 4 AAP - Abortion laws in Victoria were satisfactory and did not require
change, Acting Premier and Health Minister John Thwaites said today.

Abortion is permissible in the state if the mother's health can be shown to be at risk.

"The law states that if there is a risk to the health of the mother - the mental or
physical health - then it's not an offence," Mr Thwaites told radio 3AW.

"I think that law has worked reasonably well for some time."

Mr Thwaites said late-term abortions were also covered by different law under the category
of child destruction in the Crimes Act.
