(The Collegiate Times) (U-WIRE) BLACKSBURG, Va. -- This year's National Championship Sugar Bowl appearance has brought Virginia Tech both football fame and financial fortune.

The total payout for the Bowl Championship Series participants was $13,499,250, said Jim Weaver, athletic director at Tech.

"This money does not go to the institutions in the four Bowl Championship Series games but rather goes to the conferences of each participating team," he said. "Thus, Virginia Tech earned $13,499,250 as the team representing the Big East."

Although Tech earned the money, the athletic department only sees a fraction after the Big East takes its share.
