Gray Wolf Makes Remarkable Recovery
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Calling their recovery an extraordinary success story, the Interior Department on Tuesday proposed reducing the protection of gray wolves across virtually all of their range from Maine to the Northwest by reclassifying them as threatened, instead of endangered.
The only exception would be the Mexican gray wolf population in the Southwest which would remain endangered as its numbers grow under a controversial reintroduction program that was begun only two years ago, the department said.
