BOGOTA, Jul. 12 (IPS) -- Small farmers from Europe and Latin
America will ask the European Union (EU) to refrain from backing
the Colombian government's anti-drug strategy, charging that it
is aimed at protecting the interests of multinational
corporations at the expense of the rural poor.
The social situation and human rights record of this war-torn
South American country are "extremely disturbing," said
representatives of Via Campesina, a Paris-based international
non-governmental organization (NGO) that ended a 10-day visit to
Colombia today.
