Wild Sign Draft Pick Marian Gaborik
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- The Minnesota Wild signed first-round draft pick Marian Gaborik to a three-year contract Saturday.
Gaborik, 18, who flew back to his native Slovakia on Friday, received a faxed copy of the deal on Saturday morning, signed it and returned it, agent Allan Walsh said.
The Wild needed to sign Gaborik by midnight EDT Saturday to avoid paying a $100,000 penalty because of an agreement between the NHL and the International Ice Hockey Federation.
If an NHL team signs a player under a European contract after July 15, the NHL team must pay a fee to the European club that owns the player's rights. In this case, it would ...
