In the summer of 1941 a contingent of about 80 ex- combatants of the International Brigade, interned in the camp of Le Vernet in southern France, were deported to Algeria. The author of this book was one of them.
Benjamin Lubelski was one of the many Jews who were attracted to communism in the interwar period and found themselves fighting against Franco in Spain. With the retreat of the international brigades to France, he and his comrades were interned by the French government in camps close to the Pyrenees.
