Mavis Hyman is an Iraqi Jewess who has lived in London since 1957 and has also written a book on Indian-Jewish Cooking. One of her ancestors was among the first Jewish merchants to escape deteriorating conditions in Iraq and settle in Calcutta about 200 years ago. He was followed by many of his countrymen, who established thriving businesses in the East and magnificent Jewish community structures.
