QLD: Black sigatoka outbreak a near miss say fruit growers
BRISBANE, July 19 AAP - The recent discovery of a plant disease in north Queensland
that ravishes banana plantations was another reason to be careful about allowing fruit
and vegetable imports, industry sources said today.
The outbreak of black sigatoka in a small crop of banana plants north of the Daintree
was quickly isolated and controlled, Queensland Fruit & Vegetable Growers chairman Paul
Ziebarth said.
The disease was believed to have originated in Papua New Guinea.
"But it was a near miss because the disease can spread quickly," he said.
