WWI: German Troops in Trenches

Infantrymen of all nations endured miserable conditions while stuck in their trenches for months and years at a time owing to obsolete nineteenth century military tactics that sent them in periodic and virtually suicidal attacks over the top into inconclusive battles. Here, German soldiers nap in their frigid trench along the Western Front (near the Aisne river valley) in the winter of 1914.
