WWI: French Soldier in Trench
The brutality and horror of war were nowhere more evident than in the trenches of World War I. Infantrymen of all nations endured miserable conditions while stuck in their trenches for months and years at a time owing to obsolete nineteenth century military tactics that sent them in periodic and virtually suicidal attacks over the top into inconclusive battles. Here, in the security of a well-fortified trench, a French soldier carves some bread with his knife.
