WWI: Naval Battle of Jutland
The World War I naval Battle of Jutland pitted the German High Seas Fleet of Admiral Reinhard Scheer against the British Grand Fleet commanded by Admiral John Jellicose on May 31, 1916. British warships (pictured here) sunk nine of their German counterparts in the foggy nighttime engagement in the North Sea between Denmark and Norway while sustaining numerically greater losses (14 ships), but successfully maintained the English blockade of German ports--from which the German fleet would not again venture for the remainder of the war.
