John Dryden
On this day in 1631 English poet and playwright John Dryden was born at the vicarage of Aldwinkle All Saints, Northhamptonshire. Dryden, appointed poet laureate of England in the 1660s, wrote in a quasi-neoclassical mode; he is often refered to as a transitional writer that bridged the gap between the metaphysical poets and the classicists. Drydens most acclaimed work is the blank verse play All for Love, written in the 1670s.
