John Steinbeck
John Steinbeck captured the desperation and yearnings of Depression era migrant workers in his seminal 1939 novel "The Grapes of Wrath" (later the basis for the acclaimed John Ford film). The book did much to galvanize support for New Deal social legislation, and made Steinbeck one of Americas most famous authors. Among his other well-known works are Tortilla Flat, Of Mice and Men" and East of Eden.
