William Jennings Bryan
William Jennings Bryan gained fame for his eloquent political oratory, especially in his famous "Cross of Gold" speech against the gold standard at the 1896 Democratic Convention; he was three times that party's nominee for the Presidency before later serving as Secretary of State under Wilson. A fundamentalist and populist, he aided in the prosecution of the 1925 Scopes "Monkey Trial just before his death.
