White Socks Only, a "Pick of the List" from American Bookseller.
One very hot day, when Grandma was a little girl in Mississippi, she sneaked into town to see if she could fry an egg on the sidewalk. When her mission was accomplished, she was very thirsty.
There was a "Whites Only" sign on a nearby fountain, but that didn't bother this child-- after all, she was wearing her clean white socks. She took off her shoes and stepped onto the stool.
In a moment, she was thrown to the ground. "Can't you read, girl?" a white man yelled at her.
