Media Watchdog: New head at the Media Action Network for Asian Americans.

Growing up in a pre-dominantly white Chicago neighborhood, Toshi Yang realized early on what it meant to look different.

"I was constantly teased in school, called `Chink' or `Jap' and other derogatory names," Yang said. "There was no reference at all to my being Korean.

"Asian Americans are all lumped together in the same group. There is this widespread ignorance about the diversity of the Asian people."

It was not until high school that Yang said she got to have Asian friends. And not until after graduating from journalism school that she realized that she does not have to make excuses ...
