Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, on his first trip abroad after five months in power, played the nationalist card, dozed off during meeting and was hard put to douse a controversy over taking along 15 family members with him to Harare.

Travelling with Gowda provided a different kind of experience compared to being with P.V. Narasimha Rao - Gowda was more accessible and mixed easily with journalists.
