The first bowling balls were constructed of lignum vitae, a wood so
dense and heavy that it was called ironwood. It didn't float.

Wooden bowling balls were used through the entire 1800s. The big
change came in 1905 with the introduction of the hard rubber ball, many
of them made by the Ace Company in Butler. Rubber was the standard for
more than half a century.

Plastic balls arrived in the 1960s, followed by resin, urethanes,
and various combinations. For decades, black bowling balls were the
rule. But ...
