County Board President Stroger defends 1997 Budget.

Passage of the proposed $2.2 billion 1997 Cook County Government budget, which features no increase in the property tax rate, higher rate assessments on cigarettes and amusement activities and a new diesel fuel tax, is expected, says Cook County Board President John H. Stroger.

While the county board is scheduled to vote on the 1997 budget by week's end, Stroger, midway through his first term as President of the board, indicated that his administration has had to grapple with the escalating cost of the criminal justice system.
