Pneumonia.

"Pneumonia" encompasses many different diseases that infect or inflame the lungs. Pneumonia is caused by a variety of agents such as bacteria, viruses, and mycoplasmas, among others. Pneumonia remains an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States; in 1994, there were an estimated 4.2 million cases of pneumonia, resulting in 64 million restricted-activity days and 40.Q million bed days.

In 1993, pneumonia costs were estimated to be $7.8 billion in the U.S. This includes $1.7 billion in direct costs and $6.1 billion in lost earnings due to sickness or death.
