New Party battles for recognition in Boston.

The 83 percent of the voters in Mattapan's Twelfth Suffolk District who bothered to cast their ballots on Question 3 agree with the Eastern Massachusetts New Party: the influence of special interest money should be removed from state elections.

But the New Party, which sponsored the non-binding referendum question in 24 state representative districts across the state, faces a problem common to fledging third parties.

The 54 percent of the electorate in Mattapan which left Question 3 blank, not to mention the legions of independents and undecideds statewide, might not know they exist.
