Tomorrow Pope John Paul II will perform a beatification ceremony that
will put two former popes just one step away from sainthood. Pope
John XXIII and Pius IX both played critical roles in shaping the modern
history of the Roman Catholic Church, but their legacies are diametrically
opposed, and the juxtaposition has triggered a debate between conservatives
and liberals within the Vatican and beyond. Sylvia Poggioli is on
