Tibetans Angry but the Dalai Lama Reacts With Caution.

Protesting Tibetans greeted Chinese President Jiang Zemin on his visit to New Delhi with a blood-scribbled letter and burned a Chinese flag. But the Dalai Lama, the community's deeply revered spiritual head, reacted with a restrained welcome.

"I believe that a relationship based on genuine trust and confidence between India and China will help in creating a conducive environment in resolving the problem of Tibet I, therefore, welcome the visit of President Jiang Zemin to India," the Dalai Lama said in a statement faxed to India Abroad from Dharamsala, the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile.
