Deve Gowda's Pugnacity Seen as Election Ploy.

Even as newspapers patted H.D. Deve Gowda on the back for showing who the boss is in a speech to party delegates last week, there is speculation as to what prompted the Prime Minister's sudden show of self-assertion in the first place.

The Indian Express quoted unnamed leaders of Gowda's Janata Dal Party as saying that the stocktaking meeting of the party, the leading constituent of the ruling United Front coalition, was "to put our organization on red alert for a midterm poll."

The thinking in the party is that the Congress Party is preparing to withdraw critical support to the government in a few months time. ...
