`Werther' charms audience.
The futility presented by intense adoration of a woman by a man, when subject and object of the adoration can never be joined, is the bittersweet delicacy served by Jules Massenet in his opera, Werther, performed splendidly by Opera Memphis on Monday evening, November 25, at the Orpheum Theatre. The bitterness is a combination of that futility and the fact that the unattainable object is actually attracted to the forbidden subject. The sweet component in the recipe is formed from the quality of a love that can be lasting and fervent in the face of insurmountable adversity.
