In the next 17 minutes another person in this country will commit
suicide.

By year's end, the tally of lives lost, usually because their
depression goes untreated, will exceed 30,000. Five thousand of those
will be between ages 15 and 24.

In an effort to deal with this staggering public health crisis,
Thursday's National Depression Screening Day will include a new
component aimed at teaching family members and friends what to do if a
loved one is suicidal.
